Growing in Hearing God’s Voice – Part 3

Peaceful sunrise over a calm lake with an open Bible, ceramic coffee mug and wildflowers on a rustic wooden table, symbolising quiet time with God and making space to hear His gentle voice.

Making Space to Listen: Quieting the Noise to Hear God More Clearly

Have you ever found yourself praying, “Lord, I just wish I could hear You”?

Perhaps you’ve opened your Bible… waited… prayed… and yet nothing seemed to happen.

Maybe you’ve wondered whether God has gone quiet.

Or perhaps the truth is far simpler.

In a world filled with constant noise, notifications, deadlines, entertainment, and endless distractions, we have become experts at speaking, but beginners at listening.

God has never stopped speaking.

The question is:

Are we making room to hear Him?

This is Part 3 of a series:

Growing in Hearing God’s Voice – Part 1 | God Still Speaks Today: Why You Can Trust That He Wants to Speak to You

Growing in Hearing God’s Voice – Part 2 | Learning to Recognize God’s Voice: Why Relationship Matters More Than Technique

Elijah Expected God in the Spectacular

One of my favourite passages about hearing God is found in 1 Kings 19.

Elijah had experienced incredible miracles.

Fire had fallen from heaven.

The prophets of Baal had been defeated.

Yet only a short time later, Elijah found himself exhausted, discouraged, afraid and wanting to give up.

God invited him onto the mountain.

Elijah expected God to appear dramatically.

There was a powerful wind.

An earthquake.

A fire.

But Scripture tells us:

“The Lord was not in the wind… the Lord was not in the earthquake… the Lord was not in the fire.”

1 Kings 19:11–12 NIV

Then came something unexpected.

“…a gentle whisper.”

1 Kings 19:12 NIV

Sometimes we’re waiting for lightning bolts…

While God is speaking in whispers.

The Problem Isn’t That God Is Silent

Most of us don’t struggle because God refuses to speak.

We struggle because our lives are incredibly noisy.

There is always another email.

Another social media post or reel.

Another podcast.

Another television show.

Another task waiting to be done.

Even good things can become distractions when they leave no room for stillness.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us:

“Be still, and know that I am God.”

Stillness isn’t empty.

It’s intentional.

It’s choosing to pause long enough to become aware of the God who has been with us all along.

Jesus Made Time to Listen

One thing that strikes me every time I read the Gospels is how often Jesus withdrew.

He healed crowds.

He taught thousands.

People constantly needed Him.

Yet Scripture repeatedly tells us He withdrew to lonely places to pray.

If the Son of God intentionally created space to spend time with the Father…

How much more do we need to?

Listening isn’t another spiritual task to squeeze into an already full schedule.

It’s learning to live from God’s presence instead of merely working for Him.

Sometimes God Speaks While We’re Simply Being With Him

One of the biggest misconceptions about hearing God’s voice is believing every quiet time must produce a dramatic revelation.

Sometimes God does give clear direction.

Sometimes He brings a particular Scripture to life.

Sometimes He gently convicts or comforts us.

And sometimes…

He simply invites us to enjoy His presence.

Just as close friends don’t need to fill every silence with words, our relationship with God grows stronger simply by spending time with Him.

Not every prayer needs an answer immediately.

Sometimes… the answer is His presence.

Practical Ways to Create Space

You don’t need hours each day.

You simply need intentional moments.

You might like to try:

  • Begin your day with five quiet minutes before checking your phone.
  • Read a short passage of Scripture slowly rather than rushing through several chapters.
  • Ask, “Lord, what would You like me to notice today?”
  • Sit quietly for a few moments without feeling the need to keep talking.
  • Write down Scriptures, thoughts or impressions that draw you closer to Christ.
  • End your day by thanking God for where you noticed Him at work.

These simple habits aren’t techniques for making God speak.

They’re ways of making ourselves available to listen.

Don’t Be Discouraged If It Feels Slow

Learning to hear God’s voice isn’t a race.

It’s a relationship.

Think about getting to know a lifelong friend.

At first, you recognise their voice because they introduce themselves.

Later, you recognize it instantly, even across a crowded room.

The same happens with God.

The more time we spend with Him…

The more familiar His voice becomes.

Jesus said:

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

John 10:27 NIV

Notice He didn’t say perfect sheep.

Just sheep who keep following.

Reflection

What fills the quiet moments of your day?

Is there a small space you could intentionally give back to God this week?

Remember, hearing God’s voice isn’t about striving harder.

It’s about slowing down enough to recognise the Shepherd who has been calling your name all along.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that You are not distant or silent. Thank You that You desire a close relationship with each one of us.

Help me to slow down and make room for You amid the busyness of life. Quiet the distractions that compete for my attention, and teach me to recognise Your gentle voice above every other voice.

Give me a heart that longs for Your presence more than quick answers, and help me trust that even when I don’t immediately hear You, You are still with me, still working, and still leading me.

Thank You that I don’t have to strive to earn Your attention because You have already invited me into relationship through Jesus.

In Jesus precious name,

Amen.

This Week’s Activation

Choose one ten-minute period each day this week to spend with God.

Leave your phone in another room.

Read one short passage of Scripture.

Sit quietly for a few minutes.

Ask one simple question:

“Lord, what would You like me to know today?”

Don’t worry about hearing something spectacular.

Simply enjoy being with Him.

Relationship grows one conversation at a time.
