Have You Ever Wondered…
Have you ever read stories in the Bible about God speaking to Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Mary or Paul and quietly wondered, Does God still speak like that today?
Perhaps you’ve heard someone say, “I really felt God was leading me,” and you’ve wished you could say the same.
Or maybe you’ve prayed for guidance, waited in silence, and wondered if God had anything to say at all.
If you’ve ever asked those questions, you’re certainly not alone.
Many sincere Christians long to hear God’s voice but aren’t sure whether He still speaks today… or whether they’re simply imagining it.
The wonderful news is this:
God has never stopped speaking.
The greater question isn’t whether God speaks.
The question is whether we are learning to recognise His voice.
God Is a God Who Communicates
From the very beginning of Scripture, we meet a God who speaks.
He spoke creation into existence.
He spoke with Adam and Eve in the Garden.
He called Abraham.
He spoke through Moses.
He encouraged Joshua.
He corrected kings.
He comforted prophets.
Throughout the Old Testament, we see a loving Father continually reaching out to His people. Not because He had to, but because He desired relationship.
Communication has always been part of God’s character.
God is not distant or uninterested.
He is personal.
Jesus Revealed the Father’s Heart
When Jesus came to earth, He didn’t present a silent or hidden God.
Instead, He revealed the Father as One who desires intimate relationship with His children.
Jesus said,
“My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.”
John 10:27 (NIV)
Notice that Jesus didn’t say some sheep hear His voice.
He simply described hearing His voice as something that naturally belongs to those who know Him.
Like sheep gradually learning the shepherd’s call, we grow more familiar with God’s voice as our relationship with Him deepens.
Hearing Him is less about mastering a spiritual technique and more about walking closely with the Shepherd.
God Speaks Through His Word First
Whenever we talk about hearing God’s voice, it’s important to begin with the safest and most reliable place:
The Bible.
Every word of Scripture is inspired by God and remains His primary way of speaking to His people.
Sometimes we wait for a dramatic experience while our Bible sits unopened beside us.
Yet every time we read God’s Word with an open heart, the Holy Spirit brings truth, encouragement, correction, wisdom and hope.
The written Word keeps us anchored so we can recognise His voice in every other circumstance.
If you ever feel unsure about something you believe God is saying, always come back to Scripture.
God will never contradict His own Word.
God Also Speaks Through His Holy Spirit
Jesus promised His followers they would not be left alone.
The Holy Spirit lives within every believer, teaching, reminding, comforting, convicting and guiding us.
Sometimes His guidance comes as a Scripture that suddenly seems to leap from the page.
Sometimes it is a quiet conviction.
Sometimes it is wisdom you didn’t have before.
Sometimes it is an unexpected peace in the middle of uncertainty.
Sometimes it is a gentle nudge to encourage someone, pray for a friend, or choose a different path.
The Holy Spirit’s work is always to point us toward Jesus.
He never seeks attention for Himself.
He glorifies Christ and draws us into a deeper relationship with Him.
Why Doesn’t God Always Speak Dramatically?
One reason people become discouraged is because they expect God to speak the way He did in dramatic Bible stories.
But Scripture shows that God isn’t limited to spectacular moments.
Elijah discovered this after the wind, earthquake and fire had passed.
God came in a gentle whisper.
Often God’s voice is not loud because He isn’t trying to frighten us.
He is inviting us into relationship.
Like a loving father speaking to his child, He often speaks gently because He desires closeness rather than performance.
What If I’ve Never Heard God’s Voice?
If you’re thinking, I’ve never experienced that, don’t lose heart.
Learning to recognise God’s voice is a journey.
Babies don’t recognise every sound their parents make immediately.
Over time, through love and daily relationship, they become familiar with the voices they hear most often.
In much the same way, we grow in recognising God’s voice as we spend time with Him.
There is no pressure to perform.
No spiritual competition.
No need to compare yourself with anyone else.
God knows exactly where you are.
He is patient.
He delights in revealing Himself to His children.
An Invitation to Draw Near
Perhaps the greatest invitation in all of this is simply to spend time with Him.
Not striving.
Not forcing.
Not chasing experiences.
Just drawing near.
As we read His Word, pray honestly, worship, sit quietly in His presence and walk with Him day by day, we begin to recognise the Shepherd’s voice more naturally.
Relationship always comes before revelation.
And the beautiful thing is this:
The God who created the universe delights in speaking with those He loves.
Prayer
Father,
Thank You that You are not distant or silent. Thank You that You are a God who desires relationship with Your children and continues to speak through Your Word and by Your Holy Spirit.
Help me to quiet the distractions around me and draw closer to You each day. Teach me to recognise Your voice with growing confidence, not through striving but through relationship. Give me a heart that is attentive, humble and willing to follow wherever You lead.
Thank You that You know me by name, that You call me Your own, and that I can trust You completely.
In Jesus’ name,

Activation
This week, instead of asking, “Why isn’t God speaking?”, try asking a different question:
“Lord, what are You already saying that I haven’t yet noticed?”
Set aside just ten quiet minutes each day.
Read a short passage of Scripture.
Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight something.
Write down one verse, one thought or one encouragement that stands out.
Don’t worry about hearing something dramatic.
Simply begin paying attention.
You may be surprised how faithfully God meets you in those quiet moments.

- When have I sensed God gently guiding me in the past?
- Do I believe God wants to speak to ordinary believers like me? Why or why not?
- What distractions most often prevent me from spending quiet time with God?
- What one step can I take this week to become more attentive to His voice?
