Have you ever wondered if your prayers really make a difference?
For many years, I thought prayer was simply something Christians were supposed to do. I repeated familiar words, often with my mind somewhere else, never realizing that God wasn’t looking for perfect prayers, He was inviting me into a life-changing relationship with Him.
Everything changed when I discovered that prayer isn’t just about talking to God. It’s about walking with Him, partnering with Him, and allowing Him to transform us from the inside out.

From Routine to Relationship
When I was young, prayer was something I did because it was expected. I learned rote prayers and quietly repeated them in my head. If I’m honest, my mind often wandered far from the words I was saying. Prayer felt more like a task to complete than a conversation to enjoy.
As I grew older, not much changed. I continued saying the same familiar prayers, often without thinking about the words at all. Eventually, I would drift off to sleep or decide I’d prayed enough for the day and simply move on.
At that stage of my life, I had no idea what prayer was really about.
I didn’t understand that prayer isn’t simply something Christians do.
Prayer is how we draw near to the heart of God.
It is where our relationship with Him grows deeper.
It is where our hearts are changed to become more like His.
And amazingly, it is also one of the ways God invites us to partner with Him to bring His Kingdom to earth.
God Was Calling Me Deeper
As an adult, I attended a church where people genuinely loved God. The familiar routines and traditions were comforting, and I am thankful for all that I learned there.
Yet deep within me there was a restlessness.
God was gently drawing me into something more.
As I visited other churches, I encountered people praying out loud, lifting their voices to God and speaking in tongues. Coming from my very conservative background, it was quite a surprise!
When the time was right, God placed a wonderful prayer warrior in my workplace. He patiently encouraged me, prayed with me and showed me how to speak my prayers aloud instead of simply thinking them.
That changed everything.
There Is Something Powerful About Speaking God’s Word
For me, there was an incredible difference between praying silently in my head and speaking God’s promises aloud.
As I declared His Word, I could hear the truth for myself. My faith grew. My confidence grew. My focus shifted away from my fears and back onto God.
Over time, my prayers changed too.
Instead of only pleading with God, I began praying His promises.
Instead of focusing on what I couldn’t do, I focused on what He could do.
Instead of feeling powerless, I began trusting the One who is all-powerful.
Prayer became far more than a religious exercise.
It became relationship.
Why Do We Pray?
Over the years I’ve heard many different opinions.
Some believe everything is already predetermined, so prayer simply helps us endure what has already been decided.
Others wonder why we should pray if God is completely sovereign.
Some believe miracles no longer happen today.
Others ask, “If God already knows everything, why should we ask Him for anything?”
These are thoughtful questions that Christians have discussed for centuries.
Yet when I read the words of Jesus, I cannot ignore His repeated invitation to pray with faith.
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Mark 11:24 (NIV)
“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
John 15:7 (NIV)
“If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer.”
Matthew 21:22 (NIV)
John reminds us that our confidence comes from praying according to God’s will.
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
1 John 5:14 (NIV)
James adds another important reminder:
“…You do not have because you do not ask God.”
James 4:2 (ESV)
These verses encourage me to keep praying.
To keep asking.
To keep believing.
To keep trusting.
Not because prayer forces God’s hand, but because God lovingly invites us to walk with Him, depend on Him and partner with Him in His purposes.
Don’t Stop Praying
Perhaps you’ve been praying for someone you love for years.
Perhaps you’re praying for healing, restoration, wisdom or breakthrough.
Maybe you’ve become discouraged because the answer hasn’t come in the way or the timing you expected.
Please don’t give up.
Every prayer offered in faith matters.
Every prayer draws us closer to our Heavenly Father.
Every prayer reminds us that our hope rests in Him.
Our God still saves.
He still heals.
He still transforms hearts.
He still performs miracles according to His perfect wisdom and timing.
Keep praying.
Keep believing.
Keep trusting the One who hears every whispered prayer.
Prayer
Father, thank You that You invite us into a relationship with You through prayer. Thank You that we never have to face life’s joys or challenges alone. Teach us to pray with faith, humility and confidence, trusting Your heart even when we cannot yet see the answer. Help us to persevere, to stand on Your promises and to believe that You are always at work for Your glory and for our good. Draw us closer to You each day, and may our prayers become a place of deep friendship with You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Activation
This week, set aside just ten uninterrupted minutes each day to simply talk with God.
Open your Bible and read a short passage. Ask the Holy Spirit what He wants to show you. Then pray those Scriptures back to Him.
If you’ve only ever prayed silently, why not try praying out loud? It may feel unfamiliar at first, but you may be surprised how speaking God’s Word strengthens your faith and keeps your heart focused on Him.
Above all, remember that prayer isn’t about finding the perfect words.
It’s about spending time with your perfect Father.
