Understanding Your Spiritual Inheritance
Recently, we joined a new connect group and began working through a series by Louie Giglio about Seeing God as a perfect Father — and seeing ourselves as loved, pursued, and secure.
During one discussion, the topic of genetics came up. It sparked a fascinating conversation.
If we know our birth parents, we are often aware of what we’ve inherited, physically, emotionally, or even creatively. We may recognise:
- A family resemblance
- Musical or artistic ability
- Strong health
- A certain personality trait
And sometimes, we are also aware of traits we wish we hadn’t inherited: allergies, medical conditions, addictive tendencies, or physical characteristics we struggle to accept.
Genetics shape us in ways we cannot fully control.
But what if we considered a different kind of inheritance?
You Carry Your Father’s Spiritual DNA
As sons and daughters of God, we belong to a spiritual family tree. Our inheritance is not limited to earthly genetics. We are invited into something far richer.
From Father God, we inherit:
- Deep, unfailing love
- Mercy beyond measure
- Patience and perseverance
- Creativity and purpose
- Eternal perspective
From Jesus, the Son, we reflect:
- Compassion
- Humility
- Servanthood
- Courage and truth
- Forgiveness
And through the Holy Spirit, we receive:
- Guidance and comfort
- Wisdom and discernment
- Spiritual gifts
- Strength in weakness
- Conviction and direction
This inheritance is extraordinary.
These qualities are not distant ideals. They are part of the transformation God is working within us.
Becoming More Like Christ
Scripture reminds us:
And with no veil we all become like mirrors who brightly reflect the glory of the Lord Jesus. We are being transfigured into his very image as we move from one brighter level of glory to another. And this glorious transfiguration comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 3:18 (TPT)
Transformation does not happen through self-effort alone. It happens through surrender.
When we feel like a hopeless case…
When we believe we can’t change…
When old habits seem stronger than our faith…
We must remember: we are not the ones doing the transforming.
God is.
As we submit to Him, to His correction, His guidance, and His love, He reshapes us. He strengthens where we have been weak. He builds character where we once lacked it. He makes possible what once felt impossible.
We are being formed into the likeness of Christ.
That is our spiritual DNA.
Living from Your True Identity
Sometimes we define ourselves by what we inherited naturally: personality flaws, family dysfunction, past mistakes.
But our deepest identity is not determined by earthly genetics.
We belong to God.
We are part of His family.
We carry His image.
And every day, as we draw close to Him, that inheritance becomes more visible in our lives.
Prayer
Father God,
Thank You that I am part of Your family. Thank You that my identity is rooted in You, not in my past or my weaknesses.
Transform me into the likeness of Christ. Grow Your love, patience, courage, and compassion within me. Help me reflect Your character in my home, my relationships, and my daily life.
Shape me by Your Spirit.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Activation
Take a few quiet moments today and ask yourself:
Which characteristic of God do I long to see more clearly in my life?
Is it patience? Courage? Compassion? Forgiveness?
Write it down. Then pray specifically for that trait to grow in you this week. Pay attention to moments when God gives you an opportunity to practice it.
You are not trying to become someone new.
You are becoming who you were always meant to be.
