Prayer is one of the most beautiful gifts God has given us. It is our direct line of communication with our loving Father.
When we pray, how do we pray and what do we say? Do we give God a big list of wants and needs? Do we tell our loving Father and creator of the universe how we want these prayers answered? Do we become despondent if prayers aren’t answered how we want and within a timeframe we feel is appropriate?
Have we ever stopped and asked God what he wants us to pray for and how he wants us to pray? Prayer is communication with our loving God. It is a two-way street. We must learn to draw close to Him and listen to what is on His heart and what He desires.
Types of Prayer in the Bible
When I searched online for different types of Christian prayers, I noticed that various websites listed different numbers. Some mentioned four types, others seven, and some even ten! So I have put together a simple overview of several common types of prayer we see throughout Scripture.
1. Thanksgiving
This is when we thank God for what He has done for us and for the many blessings He has given. Gratitude reminds us of God’s goodness and keeps our hearts focused on His faithfulness.
2. Praise
Praise is when we celebrate God for who He is. We honor His character, His goodness, power, mercy, and love. Praise lifts our focus from our problems to the greatness of God. This is where we are blessing God.
3. Lament
Lamenting prayers are when we honestly bring our struggles to God. We may share our anxiety, grief, doubts, or discouragement. The Psalms are full of these heartfelt prayers that show us God welcomes our honesty.
4. Petition
Petition simply means bringing our needs before God. We ask Him to provide wisdom, help, provision, healing, or strength for our lives.
5. Deliverance
These prayers ask God to rescue us from danger, temptation, evil, or spiritual attack. Throughout Scripture we see people crying out for God’s protection and intervention.
6. Repentance
Repentance is when we humbly ask God to forgive us for our sins. Sometimes this involves things we have done, and sometimes it involves things we should have done but did not. Repentance restores our relationship with God and brings freedom to our hearts.
7. Guidance
Guidance prayers invite God to lead us. We ask Him to direct our steps, reveal His wisdom, and show us the best way forward in decisions and situations.
8. Intercession
Intercession is when we pray on behalf of others: family members, friends, our community, our nation, or even the world. In these moments we stand in the gap and lift the needs of others before God.
The Bible gives us a beautiful picture of how we approach God’s presence:
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
Psalm 100:4-5 (NIV)
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
Why Understanding Different Types of Prayer Matters
So we enter His gates – make our way over the threshold, past the barrier of the walls around the courtyard by thanking Him for what He has done. What barrier might we encounter to entering His gates? Often it’s something we have done or failed to do, e.g. pride, anger, selfishness, not prioritising getting close to God or avoiding god as we know we will be convicted of something.
Next we enter His courts by praising Him. When we enter His courts we are getting closer to Him and going deeper. When we praise we are talking about who He is and His characteristics.
However, to get up close to God and fully enter His presence, we must do more:
Exalt the Lord our God
Psalm 99:5 (NIV)
and worship at his footstool;
he is holy.
9. Worship
Finally, we come to worship.
Worship is often considered the deepest form of prayer because it focuses entirely on God Himself.
We enter His presence by worshiping at His footstool. Often we use the words worship and praise as though they are the same. However, worship and praise are different. Praise is something we express outwardly. It is the words we speak or sing as we celebrate who God is and what He has done. We might praise Him through prayer, through song, or even through creative expressions that honor Him.
Worship, however, comes from a deeper place within us. It flows from the heart. Worship is our response of love, reverence, and devotion to God. It is when we surrender ourselves fully in awe and gratitude before Him. Unlike praise, worship does not always require words, sometimes it happens quietly as we simply sit in His presence and adore Him.
So once we have transitioned to worshiping, we can spend time at God’s feet and listen to Him. We can grow to know Him. We can ask Him what and how He wants us to pray. We can be still and rest in His presence.
From this position, powerful prayers are birthed, where we co-labor to bring about God’s good plans.
As we grow in understanding the different types of prayer found in Scripture, our time with God can become richer, deeper, and more personal.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for inviting us into relationship with You through prayer. Thank You that we can come to You with thanksgiving, praise, repentance, our needs, and the needs of others. Help us grow in our understanding of prayer and draw closer to Your heart.
Teach us to pray in ways that honor You and align with Your will. Quiet our hearts so we can listen to Your voice and sense what You are placing on our hearts to pray for.
May our prayers become powerful as we partner with You in bringing Your love, healing, and purpose into the world.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
