Finding True Comfort in God: Beyond Life’s Temporary Escapes

When life feels heavy, where do you turn for comfort?

Throughout the course of our lives, we all need comfort.

When pain, disappointment, stress, grief, or loneliness come knocking… where do we seek solace?

The False Comforts We Turn To

Sometimes we seek temporary relief in unhealthy ways.

We may pour an extra glass—or two—of wine to take the edge off.

We may take more medication than prescribed to help us sleep.

Some turn to drugs.

Others to food.

These things can numb the pain temporarily… but they can also lead to dependence, poor health, and damaged relationships.

And often, we end up in a worse place than where we started.

Sometimes our coping mechanisms look different.

We may restrict food intake.

Strive for perfection.

Overspend.

These behaviours are often rooted in a desire for control and can lead to health struggles, anxiety, or financial hardship.

Others escape by sleeping excessively… or by staying relentlessly busy.

We may bury ourselves in work.

Lose ourselves in books.

Binge television or movies.

Scroll endlessly through social media.

These distractions may quiet the noise for a moment… but they do not heal our troubled souls.

Some frantically seek approval, love, or sex—hoping validation from others will soothe their pain.

But human beings are imperfect and will inevitably let us down.

Believing sex is love can be a dangerous deception.

The comfort may feel real for a moment… but the consequences can be devastating.

Others place their hope in finances, possessions, or even gambling.

Believing that “just a little more” will save them.

But when is enough… enough?

Temporary Relief Cannot Heal a Troubled Soul

If we stop and honestly assess our coping strategies, we will soon see whether they are truly helping.

Most temporary comforts merely distract us from pain.

They do not heal it.

And often they bring:

  • dependence
  • debt
  • guilt
  • shame
  • idolatry
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • relationship breakdown
  • spiritual emptiness

These things impact our work…

our homes…

our relationships…

our health…

and our spiritual lives.

The New Testament reminds us that peace and fulfilment are not things we can earn.

They are gifts of grace from God.

My Own Search for Comfort

If I’m honest…

At different times in my life, I have turned to many of these things to soothe my soul.

Yet none of them filled the God-shaped hole within me.

None of them brought lasting peace.

Only God can do that.

God Is the Source of True Comfort

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.”

2 Corinthians 1:3–4 (AMP)

What a beautiful truth.

God is not distant.

He is the God of all comfort.

He is faithful to His promises.

“O may Your lovingkindness and graciousness comfort me, according to Your word (promise) to Your servant.”

Psalm 119:76 (ESV)

Remember His Faithfulness

It’s one thing to read Scripture.

It’s another to remember how faithful God has already been.

Speak it out.

Remember the times He carried you.

The times He answered prayers.

The times He made a way.

Let these memories become your memorial stones.

Meditate on His goodness.

Retreat to the Quiet Place

Retreat to your quiet place.

Be still.

Sit with Him.

Reconnect with His love.

Know that He has not abandoned you.

He will comfort you.

He will walk with you through whatever you face.

“Be still, and know that I am God…”

Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

Offer a Sacrifice of Worship

Sometimes the most powerful worship is offered in pain.

When we do not feel like worshipping…

that may be when worship matters most.

As Bill Johnson says, this is worship that costs us.

And costly worship is often the most meaningful.

Praise changes the atmosphere.

It shifts our focus from pain to His presence.

Exchange Your Burden for His Peace

Then comes another sacrifice.

We surrender our burdens.

We lay them at His feet.

And in exchange…

He gives comfort.

Peace.

Rest.

Hope.

Prayer

Father God,
Thank You that You are the God of all comfort. Forgive us for the times we have searched for peace in temporary things instead of in You. Help us recognise the false comforts we turn to and give us courage to surrender them. Comfort our hearts, calm our minds, and fill us with Your peace and presence. Teach us to trust You more deeply and rest in Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activation

Today, ask yourself honestly:

Where am I seeking comfort outside of God?

Write it down.

Then bring it before Him in prayer.

Ask Him to help you surrender it.

Spend ten quiet minutes in His presence or put on a worship song and simply sit with Him.

Let Him comfort your soul.

Right now is always the best time to begin.
