Have you ever experienced panic… dread… or the overwhelming weight of uncertainty?

Life is full of the unexpected, and there will be times when circumstances stretch our emotional, mental, and physical capacity.

Fear and trepidation may knock at our door… but they do not need to live there.

Throughout life, we may face:

  • struggles in relationships
  • concerns about our children and grandchildren
  • job insecurity
  • financial stress
  • illness or poor health
  • accidents or emergencies
  • domestic violence or criminal acts

These situations can trigger a flood of “what if” thoughts.

What if things get worse?
What if I can’t cope?
What if God doesn’t come through?

Fear can quickly pull us out of the present and into imagined futures.

When Fear Tries to Take Control

When hard things happen, what do we do?

Do we become overwhelmed and agitated?

Do we become angry and blame God?

Do we question Him and ask why?

In these moments, we must pause and remember the words of Jesus, our beloved Lord and Saviour:

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”

Matthew 6:25–26 (ESV)

Jesus tells us not to worry.

In fact, throughout Scripture we are repeatedly reminded:

Do not fear.

Yet we often rationalise worry.

We excuse fear.

We hold onto anxiety as though it somehow protects us.

But fear steals time.

It steals peace.

It steals energy.

And it steals our focus.

Fear Distorts Our Vision

When we ruminate on what distresses us, we can unknowingly invite a spirit of fear to take up residence in our minds.

Fear clouds our vision.

It distorts perception.

It paralyses action.

It whispers lies.

Before long, we may feel trapped in a frozen wasteland of fear, unable to find our way back to the warm embrace of Father God.

Fear is the opposite of faith.

It can cause us to lose trust in God’s goodness and His promises.

And without trust… hope begins to fade.

God Will Never Leave You

Even when God does not remove the situation immediately, He promises to walk with us through it.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Deuteronomy 31:6 (ESV)

What comfort there is in knowing we do not face life alone.

God is with us in the storm.

God is with us in the waiting.

God is with us in the uncertainty.

Choose Faith Over Fear

What we focus on reveals where our treasure lies.

We can choose to dwell on the things feeding our fear…

or we can fix our eyes on our loving, all-powerful God.

“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.”

Isaiah 12:2 (NIV)

Faith does not deny reality.

Faith declares that God is bigger than reality.

When Your Faith Feels Small

Sometimes our faith feels fragile.

Weak.

Barely enough.

In those moments, we can pray the honest prayer found in Scripture:

“I do believe; help my unbelief!”

Mark 9:24 (NIV)

God honours honest hearts.

He meets us in our weakness.

He strengthens us when we feel unable to stand.

Practical Ways to Shift the Atmosphere

When fear rises, take practical and spiritual steps:

  • Put on worship music
  • Open and read your Bible
  • Speak Scripture aloud
  • Call a trusted, supportive friend
  • Pray honestly and openly to God
  • Take slow breaths and rest in His presence

These things shift the atmosphere.

Fear begins to lose its grip.

And in its place comes peace.

“…the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:7 (NIV)

Prayer

Father God,
Thank You that You are our refuge and strength in every storm. Forgive us for the times we have allowed fear to overshadow faith. Help us to trust You more deeply and fix our eyes on Your promises. Replace panic with peace, worry with worship, and fear with faith. Strengthen our hearts and remind us that You will never leave us. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Activation

Today, write down the biggest fear weighing on your heart.

Then beside it, write one promise from God’s Word that speaks truth over that fear.

Speak it aloud.

Pray it.

Believe it.

Let faith rise.

Right now is always the best time to begin.
