I don’t know about everyone else, but sometimes I feel more like a human doing than a human being.
I’m cleaning, cooking, working, supporting my church, caring for my family, catching up with friends, writing this blog, and preparing for the week ahead. My calendar can become so full of events and promises that it feels as though there is no room left to rest.
And perhaps you feel the same.
Rest Is More Than Sleep
When I talk about rest, I don’t mean only sleep, although sleep is incredibly important for our physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing.
I mean true downtime.
A pause from the hustle and bustle.
Time to go for a walk.
Time to sit and talk with family and friends.
Time to play.
Time to pray.
Time spent in the presence of God.
God designed us to need rest. He never intended for us to run ourselves into the ground trying to carry burdens we were never meant to bear.
God Promises Rest
Jesus lovingly invites us:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV)
Our God is always true to His Word.
So if He promises rest… why are so many of us exhausted?
Are We Overcommitted?
Perhaps we are overextending ourselves.
Perhaps we struggle with boundaries.
Perhaps we have believed the lie that we must be everything to everybody, all the time.
And if we are always rescuing everyone else… when do they learn to lean on God?
Or perhaps we have believed the lie that our worth is found in what we produce.
Our culture applauds busyness.
It celebrates hustle.
It glorifies exhaustion as though it is a badge of honour.
But often, busyness is just movement without purpose.
Like a bird fluffing its feathers—frantic, stressed, and achieving little of lasting value.
Are We Distracted?
Sometimes the problem is not our responsibilities.
Sometimes it’s distraction.
Social media.
Television.
Fantasy.
Computer games.
Constant information.
If we spend more time in these pursuits than in God’s presence and in real relationships, we may be sabotaging our own peace.
“Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.”
Psalm 119:37 (ESV)
Ask God What Needs to Change
When we prayerfully examine our to-do list, we may discover that some things need to go.
We may need to have difficult conversations.
We may need to lovingly step back from responsibilities we were never meant to carry.
That can feel uncomfortable—especially if we are helpers by nature.
But God will help us.
Ask Him what to say.
Ask Him how to say it.
Practice if needed.
Stand in front of the mirror.
Record yourself and listen back.
Check your facial expressions, tone, and words.
Then pray… and trust God for the courage to speak.
Is It Your Assignment?
Before saying yes, ask yourself:
- Is this truly my responsibility?
- Is God calling me to do this?
- Is this robbing someone else of the opportunity to grow?
- Do I realistically have the capacity?
Seek wise counsel.
Pray.
Search the Scriptures.
Ask God for wisdom.
Not every opportunity is an assignment.
Stop Doing It in Your Own Strength
Sometimes the list doesn’t need to change.
Sometimes we need to change.
We may be trying to do God’s work in our own strength.
Instead, bring every situation before Him in prayer.
Ask for His wisdom.
Ask for His strength.
Ask for His peace.
“Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Isaiah 40:30–31 (NIV)
When we surrender to Him, we can succeed where before we struggled.
We feel strengthened.
Hopeful.
Renewed.
Create Space for Rest
Perhaps it’s time to create practical rhythms of rest.
Consider having a technology-free evening or day each week.
Create mental and spiritual space.
Reconnect with those around you.
Put down the phone.
Turn off the television.
Pray.
Play.
Read your Bible.
Rest.
It is surprising how peaceful and refreshing this can be.
Rest in His Presence
When we spend time in God’s presence, we are refreshed, renewed, and energised.
He gives us peace.
He gives us wisdom.
He gives us innovative ideas.
He gives us strength.
He is the source of hope and love.
Time spent with Him is never wasted.
It is a treasure worth seeking.
Prayer
Father God,
Thank You that You are our place of peace and rest. Forgive us for the times we have carried burdens You never asked us to carry. Help us to release busyness, distraction, and striving. Teach us to rest in Your presence and trust You with every part of our lives. Renew our strength and fill our hearts with peace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Activation
Today, take five quiet minutes with God.
Ask Him:
“Lord, what burden am I carrying that You never asked me to carry?”
Write down what He reveals.
Then prayerfully choose one practical step toward rest this week.
Maybe it’s saying no.
Maybe it’s switching off technology.
Maybe it’s spending intentional time in prayer.
Whatever it is… trust Him.
He is faithful.
Right now is always the best time to begin.
