Grief can feel overwhelming, like a wave that crashes over us without warning. But even in our deepest sorrow, God draws near—offering comfort, hope, and a peace that holds us steady.

Grief Is Part of the Human Experience
Many of us have encountered sorrow in our lives. Grief and loss are as much a part of life as birth and marriage.
We may experience the passing of a loved one…
The loss of a relationship…
The loss of our home, possessions, or job…
Or even the loss of our health or a future we had carefully planned.
Grief touches us all in different ways.
How Do We Respond to Loss?
When we experience loss, how do we react?
Do we rage against the injustice of it all and place blame?
Do we withdraw and isolate ourselves?
Do we keep ourselves constantly busy to avoid the pain?
Do we try to numb it through unhealthy coping?
Or do we fall into such deep despair that we can no longer see the light?
We may find ourselves asking:
Why God? Why me?
We might replay the past over and over—wondering what we could have done differently…
Did we miss something?
Did we somehow cause this?
Did we stray from the “right” path?
These thoughts can quietly lead us into guilt and confusion.
But this is not the heart of God.
God’s Heart Toward Us in Grief
Jesus modelled exactly who God is while He was here on earth.
He did not come to condemn.
He came to love…
to heal…
to restore…
and to reveal the Father’s heart.
Jesus said:
So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.
John 5:19-20 (ESV)
God Is Love
Father God sent His Son to earth to bring us the Good News…
to die on a cross for the forgiveness of sins…
and to offer eternal life to all who believe.
But His love did not stop there.
He also sent the Holy Spirit—our Comforter—to be with us always.
In Scripture, both Jesus and the Holy Spirit are described as our advocates—interceding for us, guiding us, and comforting us.
What a beautiful picture of God’s heart.
It is clear that God is good.
He truly cares for us and has gone—and continues to go—to extraordinary lengths to have a relationship with us.
We must remember this truth:
“Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
1 John 4:8 (NIV)
God is not distant.
He is not cruel.
He is not looking for ways to punish us.
He is love.
We Live in an Imperfect World
So how could we possibly believe that our loving Father—
the One from whom all love and goodness flow—would punish us with suffering?
The truth is, we live in an imperfect world.
And in this broken world, we experience difficulties, heartache, and great tragedy.
Jesus never promised a trouble-free life.
But He did promise peace in the middle of it.
He said:
“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have perfect peace. In the world you have tribulation and distress and suffering, but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33 (AMP)
What a promise.
We may face pain…
but Jesus has already overcome.
His victory is our hope.
Choose Hope Over Despair
Our thoughts are powerful.
What we think about affects our emotions…
our behaviour…
and often the direction of our lives.
Our thoughts can lead us toward healing and hope…
or deeper into pain and despair.
We have a choice:
Will we dwell on thoughts that continue to wound us?
Or will we trust and hope in our all-powerful, loving God?
Scripture reminds us:
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Psalm 34:18 (ESV)
Hope is the opposite of despair.
Joy is the opposite of mourning.
But is hope simply wishful thinking?
No.
Christian hope is trusting God and waiting expectantly for Him.
And Christian joy is not fleeting happiness based on circumstances.
It is a deep and lasting confidence that comes from trusting God and believing He keeps His promises.
Lay It at His Feet
Whatever happens, we must not turn away from God—the hope of the world.
Our God is a good God.
If we lay all our burdens at His feet and admit:
“Lord, I can’t do this on my own.”
He blesses us with endurance to continue…
and peace that surpasses understanding.
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You!”
Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)
Peace comes when our eyes are fixed on Him.
Not the pain.
Not the problem.
Not the fear.
Him.
Lean Into God
If you are struggling to believe that God truly cares…
If it all feels too good to be true…
Pause.
Put on some worship music.
Read the Bible.
Spend quiet time with God.
Lean into Him.
When we take one step toward Him…
He meets us more than halfway.
He catches us in His loving embrace.
He comforts us.
He strengthens us.
And He blesses us in ways we cannot even imagine.
His mercies are new every morning.
His blessings are renewed each day.
Prayer
Father God,
Thank You for loving me so deeply.
Thank You for sending Jesus to save me and the Holy Spirit to comfort me.
Help me to trust You when life feels painful and confusing.
Guard my thoughts and help me choose hope over despair.
Fill me with Your peace and remind me that You are near to the brokenhearted.
Help me fix my eyes on You and rest in Your love.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Activation
Today, take five quiet minutes with God.
Ask yourself:
- What burden am I carrying that I need to lay at His feet?
- What thoughts am I dwelling on that are stealing my peace?
- How can I intentionally lean into God today?
Then put on worship music….
read a Psalm…
and simply sit in His presence.
Let Him minister to your heart.
