In a world full of strong opinions and quick reactions, what if the way we speak could become one of our greatest testimonies of Christ?

When Opinions Become Strongholds
When we form strong opinions and build them into our lives, it can become easy to believe that our way of thinking is the right and only way.
Then we encounter someone with a different perspective.
It can feel unsettling.
What do we do in those moments?
Do we try to prove our point?
Do we listen only to respond?
Are we quietly preparing our next argument while they are still speaking?
And if they don’t agree with us… do we become frustrated?
Scripture offers us wisdom here:
“A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.”
Proverbs 18:2 (ESV)
The Subtle Trap of Pride
It’s easy to justify our stance.
To believe we are right.
To feel more informed… or more grounded… or even more “spiritual.”
But if we are not careful, pride can quietly take root.
“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
Proverbs 11:2 (ESV)
We may not say it out loud, but do we ever think we know better?
Do we dismiss others too quickly?
These are gentle but important questions to ask ourselves.
Do We Need to Speak at All?
Sometimes the most powerful question is this:
Is my opinion needed here?
Not every moment requires a response.
Not every difference requires correction.
Scripture reminds us:
“But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgement seat of Christ….. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.”
Romans 14:10,13 (NKJV)
There is wisdom in restraint.
There is strength in choosing peace.
Speaking Through the Lens of Christ
As followers of Jesus, we are called to reflect Him in all we do—and that includes how we speak.
Before we respond, we can gently ask ourselves:
- Is this loving?
- Is this gracious?
- Is this merciful?
- Is this humble?
Because our God is love.
Our God is full of mercy and grace.
And Jesus Himself is the perfect example of humility.
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;”
Ephesians 4:2–4 (NIV)
When our words flow from this place, they bring life—not division.
Words That Build, Not Break
If we filter our words through love, mercy, grace, and humility, something beautiful happens.
Our communication becomes:
- Edifying instead of critical
- Encouraging instead of divisive
- Peaceful instead of reactive
- Loving instead of prideful
And in doing so, we reflect the heart of Christ to those around us.
Sometimes the most powerful witness we have…
is not what we say—but how we say it.
A Gentle Invitation
Today, consider your conversations.
Not with pressure… but with awareness.
You don’t have to win every discussion.
You don’t have to prove every point.
But you do have the opportunity…
to reflect Jesus in every interaction.
Prayer
Lord,
Help me to speak with grace, even when it is difficult.
Guard my heart from pride and teach me to walk in humility.
Let my words reflect Your love, Your mercy, and Your kindness.
Give me wisdom to know when to speak—and when to be still.
May my conversations bring peace, encouragement, and life to those around me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Activation
Today, try this simple practice:
- Pause before responding in conversation
- Ask: “Will my words reflect Christ?”
- Choose one interaction where you intentionally respond with gentleness and grace
Notice the difference it makes.
