While I am writing this, my daughter is with with her daughter, Phoebe, in the pre-op room of the hospital, and I am experiencing a sense of Deja vu.
This reminds me of the many times in my life of waiting. Waiting impatiently for the bell to ring and announce school was finished for the day. Anticipating my first pay check. Yearning to be old enough to get my license. Expectant for the birth of my child. Hopeful for the Lord to deliver me from an unpleasant situation.
During these times I feel a sense of anticipation. An urgency for the “event” to arrive and an uncertainty. A fear that it may not go as planned.
It’s funny as humans how we eagerly anticipate major events and put life on hold until they arrive. Yet we miss the small seemingly ordinary moments we are in. We have countless opportunities to notice God’s presence with us in the mundane moments of life.
They have lyre and harp, tambourine and flute and wine at their feasts, but they do not regard the deeds of the Lord, or see the work of his hands.
Isaiah 5:12 (ESV)
This morning as we were driving to the hospital there was a gorgeous sunrise, all pink, orange and gold. My daughter pointed it out to to Phoebe, her 4 year old daughter. I expanded on this and told Phoebe that my mum, her great grandmother used to say that the glowing golden parts were God looking at us through the clouds.
What a beautiful memory of my mother’s love for me and deep love of God that was. It really makes me ponder.
Do we take the time to stop and smell the roses, so to speak? To marvel at God’s creation? To bring our thoughts to Him and wonder what He’s thinking and what’s on His mind today?
Are we so focused on the future that we don’t live in the here and now? Each of us may be so busy we miss the chance of living in God’s presence every moment of the day. We pass up the joy of knowing Him and His ways. Of drawing close and sitting at the feet of the great I Am, and experiencing the great peace, love and hope that can be gained there.
The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
Zephaniah 3:17 (ESV)
God is with us always. He is not hiding. We only have to turn our heart to Him for His love to overwhelm us.
