I’ve read about God being a jealous God and I couldn’t really understand it, as I reasoned He is good and where all goodness comes from. I mean, jealousy is a sin isn’t it? This just must be one of those mysteries in the bible that will make sense once I get to heaven, right?
For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
Deuteronomy 4:24 (ESV)
Recently, I read a book by John and Stasi Eldredge, called “Captivating”. In it they liken God’s love for us to a woman’s love for her husband – all consuming and jealous. This really made an impact on me. I decided to read much more into it.
(for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God),
Exodus 34:14 (ESV)
I’ve discovered that God desires us far more than we desire Him. He yearns for our love, devotion, attention and worship. He wants us to want Him above anything else. He wants to possess us as a husband possesses his wife. God desires an exclusive relationships with us. God doesn’t want our affections to be shared with other people or things. I’m not saying He doesn’t want us to love our husbands, wives, family and friends, of course He does. However, when we prioritize other people or things before God, it is a rejection.
Do we crave fame, fortune, power and success, more than our relationship with God? How much time do we spend scrolling social media or watching TV? Are we overly interested in watching sport and knowing how our favorite teams are going? Perhaps we are interested in fashion or design and use most of our energy keeping up with and obtaining the latest styles?
I’m not saying these things are bad. However, if they replace God in our lives, or He is just an afterthought, or an add on, there is a problem.
If we can imagine the time we have in our life represented by a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Where the time we spend with God is represented by gold pieces. Then, this puzzle should glitter and shine with a brilliance that blinds us. Or is our jigsaw puzzle dark?
So, we must ask ourselves, is God paramount in our lives? Are we making excuses to push Him to the periphery of our lives? Or are we going through the motions of attending church, etc, without really connecting with Him? Are we allowing other things to distract us from the Essence of our lives?
To direct our lives toward God, we must we read the Word, commune with the Holy Spirit and love the Father. We praise, worship and speak to God often. We ask Him into our daily life. Every aspect of it, nothing is too big, nor too small. We invite Him to minister to us in our sleep. We accept Jesus into our lives and follow Him as our Lord and Savior and He will astound us with His goodness!
Never doubt God’s mighty power to work in you and accomplish all this. He will achieve infinitely more than your greatest request, your most unbelievable dream, and exceed your wildest imagination! He will outdo them all, for his miraculous power constantly energizes you.
Ephesians 3:20 (TPT)
