When we are suffering from physical pain it’s distracting and exhausting. Often, we try to somehow prepare ourselves as we wait for the next onslaught. Tensing up at the first sign of discomfort and trying to ride it out.
There is another type of pain that causes great suffering. It is emotional pain – loss, grief, disappointment. This type of pain can create havoc in our minds. The experts say we go through denial, blame, grief and acceptance. Although this is not true for all. We can chew over regrets, i.e. “I should have done this,” or “so and so should have ….” This guilt, shame and blame can be soul destroying.
God can and does heal people miraculously in an instant. He also heals people over time. And it’s a mystery that sometimes we don’t get healed from our afflictions in quite the way we expect.
It may seem ludicrous to suggest praising God during times of suffering. However, one thing is for certain – He is with us even in the pain.
Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble in dread before them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not fail you or abandon you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 (AMP)
God inhabits our praises. When we thank Him and praise Him we draw close to Him. We rely on His strength. Not our own weaknesses. He helps us to endure and continue, despite the pain.
Then we can go deeper and worship Him. Give Him our heart, our soul, our body. Lay it all before Him and ask what he wants of us.
By relying on His strength and keeping close to Him, He will help us to prevail. Even more, God can cause us to flourish and grow in the most difficult of circumstances.
And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.
Romans 8:28 (AMP)
People will be moved by how we respond to our suffering. They will see the hope and love in our words and actions. Christ can shine through us during these hardships.
