Recently, we joined a new connect group. They have been working through a series by Louie Giglio on Seeing God as a perfect father: and seeing you as loved, pursued and secure.

We were talking about our genetics. It was a very interesting conversation.

If we are fortunate enough to know our birth parents we likely are aware of some similarities. When we think about the good things we’ve inherited from our parents, we may realise we have many. Maybe we are blessed with:

  • Robust health
  • A family resemblance
  • Musical or artistic ability
  • and the list goes on.

Also, we must consider the attributes we would rather not have received:

  • Allergies and medical conditions
  • Drug or alcohol dependency’s
  • Certain physical attributes (short, tall, large, slim, etc.)
  • And of course many more.

My eyes were opened when we heard we have inherited DNA from our spiritual family tree – Father God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. As sons and daughters of God, we have access to the richest inheritance imaginable. If we think for a moment of the things we can inherit from the Father:

  • Creativity
  • Great love and mercy
  • Immeasurable patience and perseverence
  • Planning with eternity in mind
  • Power and might
  • and this list is endless

Jesus the Son also passes His DNA onto us:

  • Compassion and forgiveness
  • Humility and servanthood
  • Truth and courage
  • Prophecy and healing
  • Diplomacy and defending
  • Just to name a few

Then there is the Holy Spirit

  • Advocate and intercessor
  • Encourager and counsellor
  • Bestower of gifts – e.g. wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, prophesy, discerning of spirits, tongues and interpretation of tongues
  • Convictor and guide
  • as well as others

These lists are the tip of the iceberg, there are many more. When we meditate on the phenomenal characteristics of our triune God it’s mind blowing. We must remember we are being transformed into Jesus’ very image. This legacy of DNA is at our fingertips, if we submit to Him and his correction.

And with no veil we all become like mirrors who brightly reflect the glory of the Lord Jesus. We are being transfigured into his very image as we move from one brighter level of glory to another. And this glorious transfiguration comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:18 (TPT)

When we think we are a hopeless case, and that we can’t change. When we believe it’s impossible to change. We must remember, we don’t do the changing, we submit and God transforms us. He gives us the ability, guidance and strength to be strong where we have been weak. He makes it possible for us to transform into what He made us to be. He is the God of the impossible.

I hope this blog inspires you to draw close to your spiritual family tree and invite these changes into your life.

I’d love to hear the DNA you’ve inherited from our triune God. Perhaps you aren’t sure what you’ve inherited yet. Maybe you can think about the characteristics of the trinity you would like to receive. If you would like to comment or subscribe so you don’t miss any episodes, please do so below.
