Sometimes when we consider the tragedies, injustices and needs in this world, we may become overwhelmed. We might think there are so many problems we can’t possibly make a difference. And if we could, where would we start? But just like the song title by Paul Kelly: From little things big things grow, little things can make a difference. The small things we do every day can bring heaven to earth.
When we joyfully give our time, our attention and our resources to others we can bring God’s presence and goodness to benefit them.
One person gives freely, yet gains even more;
Proverbs 11:24-25 (NIV)
another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.
A generous person will prosper;
whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.
When we are on our commute to work or driving, we may see someone on the footpath, walking, running, or waiting for a bus. A great idea is what my friend Kim calls “a drive by prayer bombing” – blessing people as we drive past. They will never know we prayed; however, they will experience the effects.
While we are shopping, we can take notice of those around us – the shop assistants, the cleaners, the people collecting trolleys, and the other shoppers. We can give people our full attention and eye contact when we speak to them. Providing a smile, wishing them a good day and showing someone cares costs nothing and will brighten their day. We can be patient in queues. We can be polite, courteous and kind.
At work we can consider our co-workers and ask them how they are. Being interested in them and their lives shows that we see and care for them. We can work well with our team, have a sense of humour and enjoy a laugh together. We can encourage our colleagues. We can be caring and thoughtful when we serve customers.
If people are suffering or struggling we can offer to pray for them. We can spend time with the lonely, the disenfranchised and hurting as Jesus did.
If people have financial difficulties we can bring them a meal or a bag of groceries. We may give them financial support. We can volunteer and donate to our church’s outreach to the poor.
There are many people in this world who lack the bare necessities for survival, let alone what is needed to grow and thrive. If we are in a position to sponsor a child we can change their lives and the lives of their community. My husband and I recently sponsored a child through Compassion Australia and we hope to bless her and her family’s lives through this.
If you would like to sponsor a child click on this link Compassion Australia – Child Sponsorship | Christian Charity or seek out a charity in your country.
Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
Luke 6:38 (ESV)
When we give with a generous heart we can be Jesus’ hands and feet on this earth. We can bring love, hope, peace and joy into people’s lives, and that is something worth pursuing.
